If you have low back pain you are not alone.
Nearly everyone experiences low back pain at some point in their life.
80% of the population will at some point in their life experience low back pain. Most low back pain is relatively easy to treat - and therefore something that you should not have to tolerate.
What causes low back pain.
A large percentage of low back pain is NOT caused by a 'slipped disc' or a 'pulled muscle'. More often, it is due to stiffness of the low back joints and a loss of stability (weak muscles) around the low back and lower abdominal area.
Many people who lead a relatively sedentary lifestyle due to working behind a desk can decrease their tolerance to high stress placed on the back during times of activity (gardening, playing sport, lifting). It can often be the combination of long periods of inactivity (which weakens the structures in the back) followed by bursts of high levels of activity that can result in injury to the structures in the back.
What is the best treatment?
This type of back pain responds very well to manual therapy by a physiotherapist through reduction of the initial pain and disability, followed by a prescribed, supervised rehabilitation program.
A specific exercise program will strengthen the structures in the back and lower abdomen, reestablish flexibility, and thereby helps prevent reoccurrence of injury.
If you currently suffer from back pain or have done so in the past, then seeking advice and getting a specific treatment and exercise program can help in getting you better now and keep you that way in the future.
