Specialisation: Low Back and Shoulder Pain, Men’s Health

Stuart Baptist hails from the United Kingdom, undertaking his Bachelor of Science (Hons) at the Manchester Royal Infirmary of Physiotherapy. Physiotherapy graduates in the UK are particularly encouraged to work within the National Health Service, rather than immediately entering private practice. Stuart has spent four years at the largest teaching hospital in Europe, which afforded him the opportunity to learn about specialty areas such as burns and plastic surgery, orthopaedics, intensive care, amputees and spinal injuries, to name but a few. This training has provided Stuart with an extensive knowledge base that continues to serve him well, especially when confronted with patients who have interesting, challenging problems.

Stuart is a specialist in low back and shoulder pain and men’s health. To this end, he has lectured on Spinal Stability at the Filex International Convention and has completed postgraduate training in Orthopaedic Manual Therapy, among other post-graduate qualifications. By maintaining a sound understanding of new assessment tools, such as real-time ultrasound, he continues to learn more about spinal dysfunction. Link to factsheet on spondylolisthesis.

Stuart completed his postgraduate training in men’s health in 2009, under Dr Pauline Chiarelli. One of the only men’s health specialist physiotherapists in Australia, he works in conjunction with Urologists and men’s health GP’s in order to manage problems including continence and erectile dysfunction following radical prostatectomies. As Director of Clinical Education as SSOP, Stuart’s role involves liasing with international physiotherapy doctorate students (predominately from universities in the US) and arranging short internships for them at SSOP. Stuart’s AMTA (American Physical Therapist Association) accreditation has helped to foster this relationship with international universities. SSOP Interns not only spend time observing various SSOP physiotherapists at work, but also deepen their understanding of physiotherapeutic principles by observing some of Sydney’s top orthopaedic surgeons.

Stuart’s last wish would be for a cup of tea (of course, quintesentially British) with a Tim Tam (how patriotic), the right balance of his two cultures.
