Specialisation: Hip and Ankle Pain, Real Time Ultrasound, Pilates
Kathryn Stene’s years of experience with professional and semi-professional soccor, netball and tennis athletes has rendered her a specialist in hip and ankle injuries. Hip and ankle injuries dominate these sports, being among the most prevalent and debilitating type of injury. The pressure to facilitate a fast and effective recovery for these elite atheletes has honed her skill set, providing the experience and understanding necessary to deliver results. Real-time ultrasound is also at the core of Kathryn’s approach to assessment and rehabilitation. Since it first allowed her to see how incorrectly she was activating her own core muscles, she has sought to help those who similarly couldn’t feel what they needed to do, rather needing to see it. It’s that “lightbulb moment”, when patients understand how to correctly activate their core, that makes the use of real-time ultrasound so worthwhile. Kathryn finds that utilizing the real-time ultrasound machine extends her skills as a clinician, while assisting patients to achieve a happy, healthy spine.
Kathryn also conducts the mat pilates classes at Pilates on Macquarie. As an extension of the basic retraining of core control that is first started in-clinic, pilates bridges the gap between rehabilitation exercises given as a home program and physiotherapy treatment, while allowing people to safely return to the activity they love to do, be it gym, running, swimming: everything. The mat classes are primarily focused on activating the core muscles and gradually build up the challenges placed on the spinal system by adding complexities such as arm and leg movements and unstable surfaces (balls, foam rollers, bands). Patients who need a high level of supervision and a particular focus on spinal control benefit most from this form of pilates. Link to pilates page.
Turtle, Kathryn’s 16-month old Weimaraner dominates much of her free time. A grey, waist-high, 30kg running machine, this pup is the star of many a tale.
