Specialisation: Pilates, Core Stability Training, Women’s Health
Carly Macfarlane first became involved in Pilates in 2006, when she became aware the significant differences in the success and speed of rehabilitation when pilates principles and exercises were employed. Under her guidance of a Perth-based colleague, Carly undertook the “Polestar Pilates” course, consisting of a year’s study and examinations, before completing two years of training to become a qualified pilates instructor and being registered with the Pilates Alliance Australasia (PAA).
Carly truly understands the benefits of pilates, using the exercises and principles in her own rehabilitation program for an ongoing hip problem. Carly’s approach embraces a combination of traditional pilates principles whilst drawing on current research and physiotherapy concepts. Carly runs many of the equipment and athlete pilates group classes, as well as private and duet sessions. Link to pilates.
Carly is also a specialist in “core stability training”, a physiotherapist catch-cry. This training concentrates upon the muscles that wrap deeply around and support the spine. When these muscles are weak and dysfunctional the spine does not have adequate stability to perform daily tasks, which can lead to a predisposition towards injury and prevent full healing. Poor core stability can result in both injury to the spine, and injury to body parts that are separate to the spine, such as the knee or shoulder etc. Many of the pilates principles are based around “core control.”
In 2007 Carly obtained her Certificate in Orthopaedic Manual Therapy from Curtin University, WA. The qualification focuses on manual, hands-on, therapy for the prevention or correction of injuries or disorders of the boney system and associated joints, muscles and ligaments: the musculoskeletal system as a whole. Carly is also women’s health specialist - in physiotherapy this involves a focus on continence and pelvic pain problems that are unique to women. In particular, these problems can arise as a result of pregnancy, both ante- and post-natally. Link to bladder control factsheet
Carly has been likened to mighty mouse on a few occasions, which is more to do with her small(er) stature and her superpowers, rather than any similarities in appearance.
